Lactipro advance® can be used in conjunction with transition or fresh cow programs to:
- Put fresh cows on a more energy dense diet source.
- Promote consistent feed intake at freshening.
- Transition fresh cows more profitably.
For high and efficient milk production, the challenge is to maximize energy intake by the cow as soon as possible after calving. This involves feeding increased levels of high-concentrate diets that are rich in starch and other rapidly fermentable carbohydrates. During the transition from typical dry or steam-up diets, fed before calving, to fresh-cow or lactation diets, the microorganisms in the rumen have to adapt from predominantly fiber digestion to digestion of more rapidly fermented carbohydrates.
Lactic Acid Production
As these microorganisms adapt to high-concentrate diets, they convert the starch components into desirable volatile fatty acids (VFAs). However, even under careful diet management rumen conditions can favor the production of lactic acid, by bacteria such as Streptococcus bovis and lactobacilli. Lactic Acid which is a 10-times stronger acid than VFAs and is responsible for severe drops in rumen pH.
Megasphaera elsdenii: The Lactic Acid-Utilizer
Megasphaera elsdenii is the most important lactic acid-utilizing microorganism in cattle during the adaption to and feeding of high-concentrate diets. It plays a critical role in preventing the buildup of lactic acid in the rumen. However, Megasphaera elsdenii numbers are often low when cows are fed low-concentrate diets and need time to increase to levels capable of handling high-concentrate diets. This is a primary issue of the conventional transition or fresh cow feeding program as it delays feeding the ultimate high-energy diet. Read more about Megasphaera elsdenii.
Lactipro Advance® Robust Strain of Megasphaera elsdenii
Lactipro advance® contains 2x10^8 cfu/ml. of viable cells of a patented Megasphaera elsdenii strain, isolated from the rumen of a concentrate-adapted, high producing dairy cow. Drenching dairy cows with Lactipro advance® supplies an immediate population of this potent and resilient lactic acid-utilizing Megasphaera elsdenii in the rumen to supplement the animal's own Megasphaera elsdenii population and to respond to the change from roughage to high-concentrate diets.
